Importing RVTools Data into OneIQ

OneIQ supports importing RVTools exports directly into a workspace. This provides a fast way to bring VMware infrastructure data into OneIQ if an RVTools export is available.

Note: Deploying OneIQ Pulse will provide more detailed, up-to-date data, including performance metrics compared to RVTools.

Requirements

  • RVTools version 4.6.1 or later

  • RVTools export in .xlsx format

  • Original, unmodified RVTools export files. The file has not been opened, edited, or re-saved since export.

If the import still fails after confirming the above, contact OneIQ Support and include the RVTools file so the team can diagnose the issue.

How to Import

Importing an RVTools file to display data in a workspace follows a slightly different process from using OneIQ Pulse.

With OneIQ Pulse, an IT Environment, which is a secure container used to store data collected by OneIQ Pulse, is created first. The OneIQ Pulse data is uploaded to the IT Environment and then attached to a shared workspace.

With RVTools imports, the RVTools data is uploaded directly into a new workspace. You do not create or use an IT Environment (ITE) for RVTools imports. As a result, the RVTools export is uploaded directly into the workspace, effectively using the RVTools file in place of the ITE.

To do this, click the Home icon at the top left of the portal, then click Import an RVTools file. An RVTools workspace creation window will appear, where you can upload the RVTools file and choose the people who should have access to the data.

  1. In OneIQ, go to the Home menu and select the RVTools import option.

  2. Create or select the shared workspace where the RVTools data will be displayed.

  3. Upload the file.

  4. OneIQ will process the file and populate the workspace with the discovered infrastructure data.

When to use RVTools vs. OneIQ Pulse

OneIQ Pulse is designed to provide the full OneIQ experience, including historical performance data, rightsizing insights, cost analysis, and continuous, multi-platform data discovery. OneIQ recommends using OneIQ Pulse for this richer experience.

RVTools provides a quick way to ingest and display existing RVTools exports. It is a good option when customers already have RVTools data readily available, or when they need a data collection method that does not require the OneIQ Pulse connector to be installed.

Troubleshooting Import Failures

If your RVTools import fails or produces unexpected results, check the following common causes.

Unsupported RVTools Version

OneIQ requires RVTools version 4.6.1 or later. Files created with older versions of RVTools may have a different file structure or be missing required data sheets, causing the import to fail.

How to check: Open the RVTools application and check the version number in the title bar or the About menu. If the version is below 4.6.1, update RVTools to the latest version and re-export the data before importing into OneIQ.

Edited or Modified Export Files

OneIQ expects the original, unmodified .xlsx file produced by RVTools. If the file has been opened and edited in Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet application, the import may fail. Common modifications that cause failures include:

  • Removing or renaming columns

  • Deleting rows (for example, to remove specific VMs or hosts)

  • Removing entire worksheet tabs from the workbook

  • Re-saving the file in a different format (for example, .csv or .xls instead of .xlsx)

  • Adding filters, formatting, or formulas to the spreadsheet

Solution: Re-run RVTools against the vCenter or ESXi host and export a fresh, unmodified .xlsx file. Do not open or edit the file before importing it into OneIQ.

Wrong File Format

The import file must be in .xlsx format. RVTools supports exporting to multiple formats, but only .xlsx is accepted by OneIQ. If you exported as .csv or another format, re-export from RVTools using the .xlsx option.

Multi-File Import Support

Yes. You can upload multiple RVTools files in a single submission however, please note that all files uploaded at once will go into a single workspace.

Limitations

  • RVTools import provides a point-in-time snapshot only. For continuous discovery, deploy OneIQ Pulse.

  • Timeline-based performance history is not supported because RVTools files do not include historical performance data. Point-in-time performance data is supported.

  • Scrambling IP addresses or hostnames is not supported.

  • Cost and Insights features are not available with RVTools imports. As a result, the Cost and Insights buttons will not be visible in a workspace created from an RVTools import. This is a limitation of RVTools import and is not related to licensing.

  • RVTools is limited to VMware environments only.
