Troubleshooting Common RVTools Import Errors

Learn how to resolve the most common RVTools import errors

Written by Omega Team

Prerequisites

You have the RVTools export file that was reported to have failed import

Overview

OneIQ requires RVTools files to meet the requirements described in the RVTool Imports article:

  • RVTools version 4.3.1 or later

  • Full RVTools export in .xlsx format, and unedited since export.

Most import failures reported to support fall into one of three error messages, covered below.

Error: "The file is unusable because it was created using RVTools version X. The minimum supported version is 4.3.1"

This error indicates the RVTools export was generated by a version of RVTools older than what OneIQ supports. Files created with older versions may have a different file structure or be missing required data sheets, which causes the import to fail.

Troubleshooting

  1. Open your RVTools .xlsx export and go to the vMetaData tab.
NOTE: If you don't see a vMetaData tab, you're most likely using a version of RVTools older than 4.3.1.

  2. Check the "RVTools major version" and "RVTools version" columns. This confirms the version of RVTools used to create the file.

  3. If the version is below 4.3.1, update RVTools to the latest version and re-export the data.

Solution

Re-export the data using the updated RVTools version and import the new .xlsx file into OneIQ.

Error: "The file is unusable because it does not contain versioning information"

This error most often occurs when the file was created using RVTools' File > Export option instead of File > Export all to Excel. File > Export only exports the currently selected tab (for example, just vInfo), which does not include the vMetaData tab OneIQ needs to validate the import.

It can also occur if the file was opened, edited, or re-saved in Microsoft Excel or another application after it was originally exported — editing the file, even without changing any data, can strip the versioning metadata.

Troubleshooting

  1. Open the RVTools .xlsx file and check whether it contains only a single tab (such as vInfo) or multiple tabs.

  2. If only one tab is present, the file was likely created using File > Export rather than File > Export all to Excel.

  3. If the file has multiple tabs but is still missing vMetaData, check whether it was opened, edited, or re-saved after it was exported from RVTools.

Solution

In RVTools, use File > Export all to Excel (not File > Export) to generate a complete export, then import that file directly without opening or editing it first.

Error: "File contains corrupted data"

This error can occur if the file has been edited or modified by hand, or re-saved by another application, after being exported. This can alter the file's internal structure in a way OneIQ cannot parse, even if the file still opens normally in Excel.

Troubleshooting

Check whether the file was edited or modified by hand, or processed by another application, after it was exported from RVTools.

Solution

Re-export a fresh, unmodified .xlsx file from RVTools and import that file directly, without opening or editing it first.

If the problem persists after performing the steps above or if you are experiencing an error not listed in this article, please contact OneIQ Support and attach the RVTools file so that the Support team can diagnose further.
